Relying only on highly experienced and technology-prone user groups, which might have been typical users in the last decades, is not sufficient anymore. Instead, e.g. elderly users, or users with a completely different domain knowledge, will have to use the systems.

While current research focuses mainly on technological and/or medical aspects, there is a major need to understand in which way physical, emotional and cognitive abilities, caused by individual learning histories and health states, may impact the usage and acceptance of these systems. Hence, not only aspects of technical feasibility, but also acceptance and usability issues of pervasive healthcare applications have to be carefully considered in order to fully exploit the potential of future healthcare applications.

This requires an integrative and multidisciplinary approach, which combines engineering AND medical knowledge combining theoretical and methodological contributions of the humanities.

Intended Audience

The workshop aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines to discuss the interrelation of medical, environmental, technical, psychological and social factors and their consequences for the design, use and acceptance of pervasive healthcare systems.

Conference Topics

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Methodology

Usability of Pervasive Healthcare Systems
User Experience Design
Universal Access
Empirical Methods (Qualitative and Qualitative)
User and Cognitive Models
Participatory Design
Model-Based Design of Pervasive Healthcare Systems
Tools for Design, Modeling, and Evaluation

Human-Computer Interaction and Interface Design

Tools and Design Techniques for Pervasive Healthcare Systems
Interaction Design
Multidisciplinary or Interdisciplinary Design
Human Aspects of Future and Emerging Healthcare Technologies
Human-Computer Interaction in Healthcare
User-Centered or Human-Centered Design
Emotion and Affective User Interface
Adaptive and Tangible User Interfaces for Pervasive Healthcare Systems

End User Aspects

User Diversity, Usefulness & Usability
Ethical and Normative Requirements
Gender Specific Healthcare Design
Technology Acceptance and Performance
Social and Societal Implications of Pervasive Healthcare Systems
Legal Issues in Pervasive Healthcare Systems
Privacy, Security, and Trust in Pervasive Healthcare Systems
Cultural Aspects of Pervasive Healthcare Systems

Submissions

Interested researchers are invited to submit a workshop paper (4-6 pages) formatted according to the IEEE format until January 10, 2010. Please visit the conference submission page (www.pervasivehealth.org/submission.shtml) for detailed submission requirements and procedures. The papers should focus on current research activities and/or interesting aspects of future work. All position papers will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on their novelty, originality, and relevance to the workshop theme. Authors of accepted position papers will be notified until January 25, 2010. The workshop will be held at PervasiveHealth'10, March 22, 2010 in Munich, Germany. All accepted workshop papers will be included in the conference proceedings and published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Technical Program Committee

Vimla L.
